A plus size kaftan is chosen by your bust and hip measurements, not by your usual dress size: if you fall between two sizes, take the larger one, since a kaftan is worn loose and flowing. At Caftan Paris, every model is cut in nine sizes, from XS to 5XL, that is French sizes 34 to 60, and most can be adjusted to your measurements.
Which kaftan size should you choose?
The measurements below are body measurements, not garment measurements. Choose the size that matches your bust and your hips; if the two fall into different sizes, take the larger one.

How to take your measurements
Use a soft tape measure and do not pull it tight. Measure your bust horizontally, at the fullest point. Take your waist at the hollow, at the narrowest point, two to three centimetres above the navel. Measure your hips at the widest point, about twenty centimetres below the waist. Take each measurement twice. For the length, note your height without shoes: this is what allows the hem to be adjusted.
Cuts that flatter
The kaftan is one of the easiest festive outfits to wear in plus sizes: it falls from the shoulder without constricting. A few details of the cut make all the difference.
Straight or flared cut
The straight cut falls in a vertical line and lengthens the silhouette; the flared cut widens gently towards the hem and balances the hips. Both work well. The only cuts to avoid are those that sit too close to the body and show every fold.
The V-neck
A V-neck frees the neck and draws a vertical line that slims the upper body. A high collar suits a slender upper body better.
The belt at the natural waist
Worn at the hollow of the waist, a belt defines the silhouette without cutting it in two. Choose a wide, supple belt rather than a thin, rigid one: a braided or fabric belt follows your movements better than a metal plate. The kaftan can also be worn without a belt, straight and flowing.
The takchita and the kimono kaftan
The takchita shapes the waist with its belt, the mdamma, and suits silhouettes with a defined waist. The kimono kaftan, whose long jacket opens over a plain dress, draws two vertical lines that lengthen the silhouette: a particularly flattering piece in plus sizes. Fabrics and embroidery
Crepe is the safest fabric: matte and fluid, it drapes without clinging. Velvet gives the silhouette structure and suits winter evenings. Satin, with its sheen, catches the light and emphasises volume: it is best worn in deep shades. Organza and chiffon, both light, are used as overlays. As for embroidery, a trim running along the opening or a vertical central band lengthens the silhouette; embroidery concentrated on the bodice draws the eye towards the face. Frequently asked questions
What kaftan size for a French size 46?
An XL, which covers French sizes 44 and 46, for a bust of 101 to 108 cm. If your hips measure more than 116 cm, take a 2XL.
What kaftan size for a French size 50?
A 2XL, which covers French sizes 48 and 50, for a bust of 109 to 116 cm and hips of 117 to 124 cm.
Up to what size does a plus size kaftan go?
At Caftan Paris, up to 5XL, that is a French 58-60: bust of 133 to 141 cm, hips of 141 to 149 cm. Most models can also be adjusted to your measurements.
Should you wear a belt if you are curvy?
It is not essential. A wide, supple belt worn at the natural waist defines the silhouette; without a belt, the kaftan falls straight and lengthens the line.
Kaftan or takchita in a plus size?
Both work well. The kaftan, made in a single piece, is the simplest to wear; the takchita shapes the waist with its belt; the kimono kaftan lengthens the silhouette with its open jacket.
What length should you choose for a kaftan?
Ankle length or floor length, with the shoes you will wear on the day. Give your height so that the hem can be adjusted.
